Springtime on Chicago's Riverwalk
Last week, my oldest daughter and I helped my mom celebrate her birthday with a few days in Chicago. We may have chosen the most beautiful week of the year to go: it was that perfect time in the spring when everything was coming to life.
Flowers on the Magnificent Mile
The first thing we did when we arrived was visit the Art Institute. Last fall Tripadvisor named it the world's best museum, and it's not hard to see why. Here are some of the many, many works of art that were standouts for us:

Matisse's beautiful Daisies
Chagall's transcendent America Windows
If you recognize this painting, you're a fan of either
pointillism or Ferris Bueller's Day Off. Maybe both.
Hipster studies hipster

It's been said that Van Gogh painted the things that people take pictures of today - their food, and themselves. It was probably inevitable that I'd channel my inner Van Gogh in Millennium Park:
Picnic lunch by Millennium Park Monument
Three-generation photo at The Bean
Later, we timed our trip to the Hancock Tower so we could see day turn into night, and it couldn't have been more spectacular.

Glad the weather cooperated while you were here - it can be hit or miss this time of year! The Art Institute is a train ride away, yet I haven't been there in years - I may need to fix that this summer. :D

Oh wow, what a perfect trip this looks like! Three generations of lovely ladies, having a lovely little trip. I'm especially envious of your trip to the art museum - as someone who studied a lot of art history in university, I know I'd love that museum! I'm so thrilled you had a good time.

Happy (belated) Birthday to your mom! Perfect city to mark the occasion.
I cannot 'not' think of Ferris Bueller's Day Off when I see Seurat's painting. ;-)

I love visiting the Art Institute, and A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte is one of my favorite works of art! The last time I was there, it was a very slow day. I got to spend a long while alone with that big, beautiful painting.

Beautiful photos...we love Chicago, too. And the Art Institute is so wonderful, you have picked some of my favorites there as well. Last summer we spent four days there just being tourists and enjoying all the things you did. Fun to think of you there.

Beth, we just went to Chicago over Spring Break and had a great time at the Art Institute, visiting the John Hancock building (timing with sunset like you and the boys doing the tilt), seeing The Bean, etc. It was such a fun trip and such great food in Chicago. Looks like you had a great time with your mom. : )

Chicago is such a great city---it's been a few years since we've visited. You can always count on the Art Institute, the Museum of Contemporary Art, Millennium Park and the Magnificent Mile to bring wonder and delight. Thanks for sharing this trip.
