Braces food

Sunday, October 24, 2010

No cookies this week.  No peanut brittle, no sticky toffee, no caramel corn.

This week, my 13-year old got braces.

Anyone who has worn braces themselves, or whose child wears them, knows that for a few days you don’t care about eating.  Your mouth aches, and your teeth sense every air current that wafts by.

It may not seem like it from this blog, but I do emphasize nutrition and a balanced diet in my house.  But for those few days after someone gets new braces, I don’t worry about them eating the four food groups.  I just try to provide food that requires no chewing at all.

I was more successful at some of these things than others.  Next time you think of me as an expert in the kitchen, consider this.  I made jello for her, and I managed to gel it at a 30 degree angle.  (It must have been tipped by something else I put in the fridge.  I have truly never seen anything like it.)

One item that met with more success was the banana strawberry smoothie.  She loved it, and it got some fruit into a mouth that couldn’t chew a thing.

Strawberry Smoothie

1 cup milk
½ cup frozen strawberries
Half banana
¼ cup strawberry yogurt (original recipe called for plain yogurt and 1 Tbsp liquid honey.  I just used what I had on hand)

In blender, blend milk, strawberries, bananas and yogurt until smooth and frothy.

Oh, I have been there, done that. Boy, does it hurt. I remember through the haze of ouch being amazed that teeth, that have no nerves, can actually hurt. It wasn't my gums or my mouth, it was my *teeth* that hurt. I still don't understand it, but I winced just thinking about it. I was all about jello, creamy soup and yoghurt. Things I could swallow without moving my mouth. My sympathies to your daughter!

I am sorry about this. I have never worn braces but I can imagine the pain. But she has her sweet mother to comfort her with nice smoothies and perhaps soups!

I remember braces only all too well! Smoothies have a way of 'smoothing' things out in a soothing way. :-)

p.s. Make sure she uses her retainer once the braces come off. She may fight you on that, but trust me...

I have never put on braces before but my friend told me that it's pretty painful. I'm sure your kid will love this smoothie. Hope you're having a wonderful weekend.

Braces. Been there, done that AND my two kids suffered through them too. :o) This is very similar to a smoothie recipe I make. I also use frozen bananas (I cut them up before I freeze them, make it easier). If you haven't tried using frozen bananas, try it, it makes the smoothie super thick. Yum!

My Dad used to make his special eggnog. One egg, a big glass of milk, a healthy glug of vanilla, and a big spoon of brown sugar. Whisked together by hand (no silly electric contraptions for him), poured back into the glass with flare (i.e. by lifting up the bowl so that the liquid poured from way up high, creating lots of bubbles), and topped with nutmeg.

Lots of people would cringe at the raw egg, but I never had a problem, and it still remains a favourite of mine.

Ouch! I've never had braces but I can imagine how uncomfortable they must be. I hope your daughter enjoys this delicious smoothie!

Never had braces but had a series of rather unpleasant dental procedures; horrifying actually. Jello sounds comforting and so does smoothie. Thanks for sharing.

I have never had to wear braces, but I feel for your daughter. This smoothie seems the perfect way to get some nutrition without pain.

It was just a few years ago that my oldest got his braces. He was miserable for about a week. He thought it was all worth it when they finally came off and he had straight teeth, though. You are so good to make your daughter smoothies.

Oooh, I had braces, and I absolutely recall the discomfort! I hope her pain doesn't last, and good luck creating more chewing-free dishes for her to enjoy, haha. It will get better, but even after the pain goes away, I still don't recommend eating ribs, haha :)

My twins have their first orthodontist appointment on Friday. I'll have to remember this recipe for them.

Ow! I remember having plates, I was lucky enough not to have to go the whole shebang with braces. Great food ideas and hope your 13 year old's teeth stop hurting soon.

Loved your last post about the hotel too but I couldn't leave a comment for some reason.

My son is just out of them (braces) and my daughter will be going into them in a couple of months. All I can say is OUCH and milkshakes and smoothies are cure-all. :) A banana smoothie sounds nice right about now. I am having insomnia.

All three of my kids had braces, and then I got them as an adult after they were all done with their braces routine. A smoothie is a great idea!

Aaaah braces. Been there, done that. To this day, I don't chew gum because I couldn't have any while I had braces.
